Groundwater that accumulates beneath the slab flows into the pit through a perforated liner and through any connected drainage channels. When the water level in the pit rises to a set point, a float switch activates the pump, which forces the water through a discharge pipe routed to daylight well away from the foundation.
The critical details that most contractors get wrong: the discharge line must terminate at least 10 feet from the foundation, sloped downward to prevent backflow, and directed away from neighboring properties. Interior Perimeter Drainage Channel
A channel is saw-cut into the concrete floor around the perimeter of the basement, a perforated pipe is laid in gravel, and the concrete is patched over it. Water that enters through the wall-floor joint or through the floor slab is captured and directed to the sump pit before it can spread across the floor. This is the most common and cost-effective interior waterproofing solution.
Exterior French Drain
Excavation around the foundation exposes the footing, a perforated pipe is laid in gravel at the footing level, and the trench is backfilled with drainage stone. Surface water and groundwater are intercepted before they reach the foundation wall. More disruptive and expensive than interior systems but addresses the source directly. Best for severe hydrostatic pressure or new construction.
Vapor Barrier System
A heavy-duty polyethylene membrane is applied to the interior foundation walls and floor, creating a continuous barrier that channels any moisture that penetrates the wall down to the drainage system rather than allowing it to evaporate into the living space. Critical for finished basements — without a vapor barrier, moisture migrating through the wall will condense on the back of drywall and create mold.

What we do not do: apply hydraulic cement or surface coatings over active cracks and call it waterproofing. Injection from the interior, or excavation and membrane application from the exterior, are the only permanent solutions.
